Chapter Eight

I didn't really know where I was going to go once I got out of the dorm. I had my keys, but no cell phone, so I wasn't going to try and drive home. Plus, I would have had no idea what to tell my parents when I got there.

"Sorry, I had a fight with Isaac about me not sleeping and skipping class, is it cool if I stay here for a while?"

"Hi, I just felt like taking a nice, six hour drive, what's for dinner?"

"I haven't slept more than 4 hours a night in over a week. I'm starting to imagine things. I think I'm cracking up. What's new with you?"

Yeah. None of those scenarios sounded like much fun. I decided to get in my car and just drive around campus til I figured out what I wanted to do next. As I was getting into my car, I saw Lucy walking across the parking lot.

"Jo!" she yelled, and started to run toward my car.

"Fuck you!" I yelled back. She stopped where she was and looked puzzled.

I got into the car and fumbled with the keys as I tried to start it. I could see Lucy in the rearview walking quickly toward me, so I threw the car in reverse and screeched out of my parking space. I stopped a few feet from Lucy and put the car into drive. I was pretty sure I scared her. She probably thought I was going to hit her, since she thought I was crazy. The truth was, I'd kind of wanted to hit her, I just didn't want to go to jail.

I roared out of the parking lot, almost hitting another car as I pulled out into the street. I could see my face in the rearview mirror and I was startled by my image. My hair was sticking it all directions, and not in a cute way. My face was beet red, but my lips were pale. Worst of all, my eyes were bloodshot and wide open.

At that moment, I didn't even recognize myself.
