Chapter Fifteen

As we approached the dorm, I realized we'd soon be walking by my car. Perfect.

"Hey, Luce, I need to grab some CDs from my car," I said.

"OK," she said. "Want me to come with?"

"Sure, it's right up there," I pointed. As we drew near, I could kind of make out that the back window was busted. Instead of pointing it out then, I looked down at my watch and pretended to be very interested in my fingernails, hoping Lucy would spot the broken window first. She did.

"Oh my god, Jo, I think someone broke into your car!" We started running and when we got to it, I could see that nothing had been taken.

"That's so weird," I said, trying to look worried. I unlocked the car and looked inside. "They didn't take anything."

"You should still report it," Lucy said, hands on her hips. "This is unacceptable."

"Lucy, it's fine," I shrugged. "They didn't take anything. It was probably just some kids or something."

"But shouldn't the university know there are vandals around here?" she asked.

"Probably," I said. "But if I call security, it'll take them forever to get here and they'll have to fill out a report and it'll be this gigantic hassle. I'll just take the car to the shop tomorrow."

"Are you sure?" she asked.

I nodded. "Seriously, Luce, it's freezing out here and we're not even ready for the pre-party party yet."

Lucy threw her head back and laughed.

"You're so right," she said. "Let's get going." She grabbed my arm and we ran inside, giggling the entire way.

Even I was beginning to believe my own lies.
